While an exhibition has just ended in Tokyo, Aki Kuroda is preparing two exhibitions to be held in early 2022, in New York and Kyoto. Before that, I wanted to present his most recent works in Paris, in a beautiful space in the Marais.
Room 1 Collages Self-portraits
For this series of large-format collages, Aki Kuroda first made carborundum engravings, sculpting the paper which is then covered with a deep gray print. Then, at random in his studio, he cut out, sometimes tore up and pasted images from his archives, exhibition views, cartoons, catalogs, and sometimes from Japanese magazines. All these elements, between West and Asia, compose strange self-portraits.
