Since Ernest Hemingway's death in 1961, his house in Key West, Florida, has become a museum, the garden a shelter for his cats' descendants. There are still about sixty of them, including about thirty polydactyls that the Nobel Prize-winning writer was particularly fond of. This passion for these cats with 6 or 7 fingers came to him after having received a cat with six fingers from the captain of a boat. In English, the word "Hemingway cat" has become a slang word for polydactyl cats.
