SERGIU CIOCHINA - BIOGRAPHY

Born in 2001 in the Republic of Moldova, Sergiu Ciochina lives and works in Paris.

From childhood, painting became a necessity for him. Fascinated by light and the emotional power of images, he found in it a space for intimate projection, capable of revealing the sensitivity, depth and richness of inner states.

Trained in painting at the Chisinau Academy of Fine Arts, from which he graduated in 2021, Sergiu Ciochina develops a powerful and instinctive figurative language, fueled by a profound inner intensity. For him, the body becomes a space of revelation. Emotions are conveyed through the gaze, through faces, a multitude of discreet details that the painting allows to emerge over time.

In 2023, Sergiu Ciochina obtained a talent visa—making him one of the few Moldovan artists to receive this recognition—and moved to Paris. This arrival marked a turning point. The city acted as a catalyst. His work gained in density and clarity. His brushstrokes became more refined, the materials more expressive. A large part of his recent work revolves around blue tones: a deep, almost introspective blue that structures the space as much as it conveys emotion.

In Sergiu Ciochina's work, the human figure is central. The body becomes an essential, intimate territory, yet to be explored. It's not simply about telling a story, but about capturing a state of being. Gestures are reduced to their essence, as if everything were happening elsewhere—in a posture, in the tension of a shoulder, in a held breath. The gaze occupies a special place, carrying emotion, like a point of passage between the inner and outer worlds.

Each work is born from a long process, first mental and then compositional, built up through successive layers, additions and subtractions, scrapings, until a dense and vibrant structure is achieved. It is this deliberate slowness, this constant dialogue with the material, that gives his painting its depth and power.

In May 2026, Yoyo Maeght dedicated his first major solo exhibition to him at the Château de Malleret, in Bordeaux. At only 24 years old, Sergiu Ciochina affirms a promising trajectory, destined to unfold through numerous projects and exhibitions in France and internationally.
